Allderdice (15-9) scored only 16 points in the first half and trailed by three. But the Lady Dragons came on strong in the second half and slipped past Westinghouse (13-7), 49-42, to win the City League championship Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Petersen Events Center.
“We shot poorly and we are going to work on shooting, shooting and shooting,” Allderdice Coach Ellen Guillard said. “I’m happy that we won and it’s only my second year. I’m just proud of everybody.”
The Lady Dragons have won eight of their past nine games overall and improved to 3-0 against Westinghouse this season.
Emma Waite, Sophia North and Brooklyn Jones are talented guards and they’re Taylor Allderdice’s super sophomores.
Two sophomores starting together on one basketball team is pretty ordinary, but three sophomores playing for a championship team at one time? Comprising 60 percent of a team’s starting lineup? That is extremely rare.
North led Allderdice with 15 points, Waite added 14.
Waite, a 4-foot-11 sophomore guard, hit 8 of 9 free throw attempts and scored 12 fourth-quarter points for the Dragons.
Waite may be small in size, but mighty otherwise.
In the semi-final game against Carrick, Waite scored 22 points and had five 3-poiinters.
Small female players have had big impacts for years at Western Pennsylvania schools, including UNLV star and WPIAL Hall of Fame coach, Karen Hall, who was a legendary player at Mount Alvernia High School.
