HANDSOME GENTS WITH GARY WHITE, far right.
by Debbie Norrell, Lifestyles Editor
There was a time when the only thing happening on the first Saturday in May was in Kentucky or at one of the local parks in Pittsburgh. Now you can attend the big hat party in the park and then head to “Gary White Presents Derby Day” at the Savoy. This is one of the ultimate day parties. Ladies and gentlemen put on their sharpest hats, beautiful dresses and of course, those beautiful hats and fascinators, which were over the top, seen on both floors of the Savoy restaurant. Guests enjoyed the sweet music of Kenny Blake on the first floor and Nate the Phat Barber on the second floor. Mint Julips were the libation of the day, tasty hors’ doeuvres were served and the Derby was on the big screen for everyone to see.
If you checked out the social media comments from the many people that attended, a good time was had by those lucky enough to attend. A portion of the proceeds was donated to Ozanam Inc. Those that missed it have already added the Derby Day Party to their calendars for 2020. It’s the first Saturday in May every year.
