In a letter to Second Baptist Church, Homestead, Pastor Donald P. Turner said, “I had a wonderful stay, 48 years, only a few men can say that about one church. Thanks, Second Baptist. I owe the majority of my life’s experiences to you. I owe so much to the people of Homestead. My life is richer and I’m not talking about money. You have given me more than money can buy. You have given me life.”

On May 18, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Monroeville, members and friends said, “well done good and faithful servant” to Pastor Donald P. and First Lady Jean Turner. With Deacon Mark Grinage as master of ceremony, guests enjoyed a farewell ceremony that featured a praise dance by Tyler Gould, presentations from the Sickle Cell Society and the Allegheny Union Baptist Association and a selection from the Second Baptist Male Chorus.

Reverend Turner’s good friend of 40 years, Rev. William C. Calloway, Pastor of Mt. Olive First Baptist Church in Clairton, shared a humorous story about Rev. Turner loaning him money for a tax bill. Reverend Calloway assured the crowd that the funds have been paid back. Stephen Turner and Nicole Randall-Turner also spoke about the kindness of Rev. Turner. Reverend George Williams made a presentation on behalf of the Baptist Ministers Conference, Borough of Homestead Council and Deacon James Perry made a presentation on behalf of the Official Board of Second Baptist Church.

May 18 was declared as Rev. Donald Turner Day by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
