The Evelyn Paige Parker Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by the Pittsburgh Black Nurses in Action (PBNIA) and was named after Evelyn Paige Parker who was a dedicated nurse and member of the organization. On June 15, at the LeMont Restaurant, PBNIA held their eleventh Evelyn Paige Parker Scholarship Brunch.
Each year PBNIA awards a deserving nursing student a $1,000 scholarship from their fund managed by the POISE Foundation. The 2019 PBNIA Evelyn Paige Parker Scholarship was presented to Leah Johnson. Scholarships were also presented to Charis Allen, Jasmine Collier, Tyra Patterson and the 2019 Victor D. Fagen Sr. LPN to RN Continuing Education Scholarship was presented to Catherine Manson. The Victor D. Fagen Sr. scholarship was a first for PBNIA.
Corporate scholarships were sponsored by Allegheny Health Network, UPMC and University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Outstanding Service Awards were presented to: Dr. William Simmons, Gwendolyn Terrell, Ada Milliner, Victor Fagan, Michael Harper and Dorretta Lemon-Fallen.
Guests enjoyed a tasty brunch, CAPA High School Smooth Jazz and Keynote speaker Paula Day, RN. Day spoke about why dancing is good for the brain and encouraged people to find a sound they like, stand and shake.
The mission of PBNIA is to reduce health disparities among African Americans and other minorities in the Greater Pittsburgh area through education and awareness.
