Letter to the editor: African American inclusion is a priority (Stefani Pashman)

by Courier Newsroom

Editor:

I was recently quoted in a feature in the New Pittsburgh Courier about a new key member of our leadership team at the Allegheny Conference—“Mark A. Thomas ‘plans to be a champion for the region’ as president of Pittsburgh Regional Alliance.”  Unfortunately, the article doesn’t provide the full context of my remarks regarding one of our regional diversity challenges.  As such, I understand that my comments were offensive to some, and for that I’m very sorry.

The Allegheny Conference, under my leadership, has made African American inclusion a priority.  We have devoted new resources, hired a Director of Diversity & Inclusion, established a board committee, and made progress on a robust set of initiatives tackling the issues that were brought to us by listening to African American elected officials and community members. Understanding and addressing the complexity of our region’s inclusion challenges is a priority for me and the Conference.

I remain committed to being a champion, a partner and a friend as together we drive to create a next generation economy for all in the Pittsburgh region.  I hope you can accept my apology and continue to help me deliver on our ambitious commitments.

CEO, Allegheny Conference on Community Development
