Next man up…that’s the Steeler way! (Nov. 13)

by Bill Neal, For New Pittsburgh Courier

:10—That being said, let’s take a minute and talk about the men that are down. Trust me there’s a point here. #1. As you well know, the Steelers franchise and soon-to-be Hall of Fame quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, is gone for the season. #2. Stephon Tuitt, a six-year veteran defensive lineman, is gone for the season. #3. Quarterback Mason Rudolph is standing on shaky ground after being knocked out cold against the Ravens a few weeks ago. #4. James Conner, now minus about 30 pounds that padded him at Pitt, is week to week to week. #5. Joe Haden—ankle. #6. Benny Snell—knee. #7. JuJu Smith Schuster – ankle. #8. Roosevelt Nix —foot. #9. Ramon Foster —concussion. And, just for the record…#10. More than likely tight end Vance McDonald will get hurt. I am just saying!!! And yet, we rise!

:09—If Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin gets this team to 8 and 8, I dare say into the playoffs with this mash unit, he deserves Coach of the Decade.

:08—Just another warm reminder and continued condolences to the late great Cleveland “Cle” Edwards. The legendary Fifth Avenue Archer who passed on much too soon, but clearly left a giant footprint. A do-it-all athlete at Fifth, an All-American basketball player at Robert Morris University, a game-changer at the University of Pittsburgh as both a player and a coach and most importantly a big brother to many in the sports and community arena, me included. A very special thanks must go out to David “QuickDraw” Strothers and Calvary Baptist Church for a celebration of life ceremony given in Cle’s honor. And of course, praises to his children and family for sharing the moment and time to the legion of friends who came out to say goodbye.

:07—Speaking of greatness, and I just was, do “yourself” a favor, don’t do it for me. Run…Do-Not-Walk…to the closest theater to you and see Harriet, the movie/documentary of the legendary soldier who rescued over 70 slaves to freedom and a ton of other things you didn’t know. The movie is fantastic. I give it 5 basketballs just like other great movies including Malcolm X, the Magnificent Seven, the Godfather, the Outlaw Josey Wales—I am just sayin’! And if Cynthia Erivo doesn’t win the Oscar for her lead role…“No Justice, No Peace!”

:06—How about a tip of the cap to Andrew McCutchen. Playing for Philly, but still lives here in the Burgh. And still does big-time charity work in the area. Not bad for a guy that wasn’t treated as well as he should have been by Pirate management.

:05—This just in. Two things about the World Series. #1. The Washington Nationals won. Who cares, they went to the White House! #2. More importantly, how about that unbelievable and amazing backflip Simone Biles did before she threw out the ceremonial first pitch for game two of the series. C’mon, Man…C’mon, Woman!

:04—Not enough attention given to the nationally ranked Pitt women’s volleyball team? You got it. The Pitt women’s volleyball team is ranked #2 in the nation with a record of 24-1. Let’s go Pitt!

:03—Pitt men’s basketball is back with some significant interior changes to the Petersen Events Center. Too early to tell about changes to the team. A whoopin’ to my alma mater, Slippery Rock University, to open the season, an upset over ACC opponent Florida State and a loss to a very good but relatively unknown Nicholls State out of Thibodaux, Louisiana leaves us room to wonder.

:02—This just in. Mason Rudolph may be your quarterback…but he won’t be your franchise. And yes, you can take that to the bank!

:01—As I always leave you with words of wisdom. If you don’t vote him out…you get what you deserve!

:00—GAME OVER.
