THE LAVELLE FAMILY—One of the two honorees at the annual Spirit of King Award Ceremony was Robert R. Lavelle, the founder of the Hill District’s Dwelling House Savings & Loan company. Mr. Lavelle was adamant in giving home loans to African Americans who oftentimes were excluded from obtaining loans from mainstream banks. Mr. Lavelle died in 2010 at age 94.
