LOCAL, STATE NAACP WANTS JUDGE TRANQUILLI REMOVED FROM OFFICE

by Courier Newsroom

During a news conference at Freedom Corner in the Hill District, Feb. 18, NAACP Pennsylvania state president Kenneth Huston stood with Pittsburgh NAACP members and members of other local branches to denounce the alleged comments of Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Mark Tranquilli. He’s accused of calling a Black juror “Aunt Jemima” in chambers following a jury trial three weeks ago.

“It is absolutely incomprehensible that this judge who serves our community throughout Allegheny County would speak in such a way about a young lady that met the qualifications to be on a jury,” Huston said. “A judge sits high for a reason. He sits high to be fair, to protect all those that come before his courtroom. The state conference of the Pennsylvania NAACP will not stand idly by as this systemic racism permeates throughout the system of the criminal courthouse of Allegheny County.”
