12 new coronavirus deaths in PA; Wolf tells Beaver and Washington counties to stay home

Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 crisis continues to deepen, with 12 new deaths reported Saturday, even as Gov. Tom Wolf said he’s taking steps to bolster the state’s health system. He said the state can handle the crisis as long as residents are vigilant about social distancing.

“If we’re successful, we’re going to have enough. If we don’t do this, if we shirk our duty, then … the most pessimistic models are going to be the ones that have the day,” Wolf said.

Wolf expanded the stay-at-home order to three new counties, including Beaver and Washington, which now have 22 and 23 confirmed cases, respectively.

The state reported 2,751 total cases and 34 total deaths at noon Saturday. The number of cases in the state has been increasing by about a third every day for the past two weeks.

Allegheny County has 219 known cases of the novel coronavirus as of Saturday morning — up from 158 reported on Friday. That puts Allegheny County among the counties with the highest rates of new cases in recent days.

Wolf said the state is ramping up its efforts to expand capacity in the state’s healthcare system to address a potential dramatic spike in the number of critical COVID-19 cases.
