Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 crisis continues to deepen, with 16 new deaths reported over the weekend, even as Gov. Tom Wolf said on Saturday that he’s taking steps to bolster the state’s health system. He said the state can handle the crisis as long as residents are vigilant about social distancing.

The state reported 3,394 total cases and 38 total deaths at noon on Sunday. The increase of 649 cases reported Sunday was the largest single day increase of cases so far.

So far, there have been more than 316 patients hospitalized in the state and 110 of those have required ICU treatment; 64 patients have required ventilators.

Allegheny County has 265 known cases of the novel coronavirus as of Sunday morning — up from 219 on Saturday. That puts Allegheny County among the counties with the highest rates of new cases in recent days.

Wolf said the state is ramping up its efforts to expand capacity in the state’s healthcare system to address a potential dramatic spike in the number of critical COVID-19 cases.

On Sunday, Wolf asked President Trump to make a disaster declaration for the state, which would free up additional funds for unemployment assistance, crisis counseling, nutritional assistances and hazard mitigation.
