Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine reminded Pennsylvanians that social distancing measures will continue after the state begins its phased reopening on May 8.

“When we move from red to yellow, it is not a signal that we are releasing everyone to go about their normal activities,” Levine said. “Yellow actually means that we need to proceed with caution.”

She said that people who live in areas that are moved to the yellow phase of reopening should continue to work from home if possible, limit trips to the store and refrain from visiting people who are sick or have compromised immune systems.

The Department of Health on Friday will announce which areas of Pennsylvania will move from phase red to yellow for work and social restrictions on May 8.

Once a county enters the yellow phase, it is no longer under stay-at-home orders, but Levine said residents should still try to avoid leaving the home.

“The rule will be to avoid groups of 25 or more, but I think it is still prudent for people to not socialize, especially in large groups,” Levine said.

Levine said that childcare centers will be allowed to open during the yellow phase, even though they could exceed the 25-person gathering limit, so “people can go back to work.” She said the health department is working on guidelines for centers to protect employees and children.

Allegheny County reported 38 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, increasing its total number of cases to 1,273. There are six new hospitalizations, which now total 228 including past and present hospitalizations. The county’s death count went down by one from Tuesday after a data input error was corrected. No new deaths were reported. The death toll for Allegheny County is at 86.
