On Friday, May 1, Gov. Tom Wolf announced which counties will be among the first to move to the yellow phase of reopening, with Allegheny and other southwestern counties remaining in the red phase.
Only 24 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, those located in the northwest and north-central regions of the state, will move from red to yellow on May 8. In the yellow phase, some restrictions on work and social interactions will be lifted and retail businesses will be permitted to reopen with restrictions while schools, gyms, and hair and nail salons will remain closed and limitations on large gatherings will remain in place.
The counties moving to yellow are: Bradford, Cameron, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Crawford, Elk, Erie, Forest, Jefferson, Lawrence, Lycoming, McKean, Mercer, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, Union, Venango and Warren.
For a county to move from the red to yellow zone of reopening, the county must have fewer than 50 daily new cases per 100,000 people throughout a 14-day period. Allegheny County is within that window, but other factors, including having enough testing available for those with symptoms and target populations, such as those at high risk, health care personnel and first responders, were also considered.
The full reopening plan is available here.
On Friday, Allegheny County reported five new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total to 99. Another 30 cases were confirmed, bringing the county total to 1,319. The number of past and present hospitalizations is 235, down one from the day before because some cases were incorrectly identified as hospitalizations that were actually emergency room visits.
On Friday, Pennsylvania reported 97 new COVID-19-related deaths and another 1,397 cases. That brings the totals to 2,354 deaths and 46,971 cases. Of those who’ve tested positive, an estimated 2,878 are health care workers.
