Gov. Tom Wolf announced Friday that Allegheny County and most of its neighboring counties are among 16 that have been newly cleared to move from the yellow phase of reopening to the green phase effective June 5.

The green designation, Wolf said earlier this week, allows, among other things:

  • Hair salons and barbershops to operate by appointment only
  • Prisons and hospitals to host visitors subject to discretion of the facility, while nursing home restrictions will remain in place
  • Restaurants, bars and retail food businesses to resume dine-in service for both indoor and outdoor seating, provided the establishments comply with social distancing guidelines and observe maximum occupancy limits — though congregating at bars is still not allowed
  • Professional sports teams to practice or play, but without spectators.

Gyms and spas are still “strongly encouraged,” the governor has said, to operate by appointment or reservation only.

Large gatherings of 250 or more – such as festivals, concerts, sporting events and movie showings – are still prohibited. Houses of worship are excluded from limitations established by Wolf’s order, but encouraged to enforce social distancing.

The announcement came after Allegheny County Department of Health reported no new deaths from COVID-19 on Friday, and tallied 19 just newly confirmed cases, for a total of 1,870 since March 14.
