Don’t fall prey to being used to further other peoples’ agendas

As Black people, we have to be forever mindful of falling prey to being used to further the agenda of those who do not have our best interests in their hearts. The reality of police brutality and the need to rise up in protest is undisputed.

However, please recognize there are forces mingled in our community protests who will lead many unthinking people down a road that leaves nothing but ashes after the fire burns out. In the heat of legitimate passion, there are those who ask us to release our fury without a sense of consequence.

Be careful! Talk to your children to help them understand what ultimate victory looks like. Victory is not vandalizing African American businesses. Some of those who lead others to burn and loot are not our friends and their definition of victory is not racial justice.

It’s often been quoted the devil quotes scripture to serve his purposes. There are those among us on the crowded streets of protest who chant with us, scream and holler, toss bricks and gasoline bottles at police and then disappear quietly into a voting booth and vote for Donald Trump.

There is overwhelming justification for public outrage. Remember this is not new. Police didn’t put a knee on Fred Hampton’s throat forty years ago, they filled his body with bullets! The struggle is not new. Malcolm and Martin fought the same battle decades ago. We knew who our leaders were, even though they used diverse tactics, they marched to a common drummer.

Be alert. There are many who walk in our ranks who have not earned the legitimacy to be followed. The leaders who will guide us to outcomes of justice and peace are not one day soldiers!

Keep fighting, but please don’t allow others to lead you into the incendiary belly of the beast while they rest comfortably while you are consumed.
