by PublicSource Reporters

Allegheny County reported 61 COVID-19 cases Friday, its largest single-day increase since April 23, when the number of new reported cases was also 61. The county also reported two new deaths and one new hospitalization Friday. The county now reports a total of 2,382 cases, 186 deaths and 379 past and present hospitalizations.

In a statement Friday afternoon, the county health department said the 244 new cases reported this week were “overwhelmingly among younger people who were traveling, visiting bars and restaurants, and out in the community.”

The median age of the cases was 31, and two-thirds of them were among those aged 19-49. Of the people who tested positive this week, a number of them reported going to bars and restaurants recently. Fifteen bars and restaurants were associated with new cases in interviews by the Department of Health, and five were reported multiple times.

Other people who tested positive who were contacted by the county’s tracing team reported traveling to a number of places throughout the country, including Myrtle Beach, Houston, Nashville and multiple cities in Florida, and a small number reported going to church, family get-togethers, activities with their children, or protests.

Pennsylvania health officials reported 600 new cases Friday, the state’s highest increase since June 12, as well as 22 new deaths. The state now has 84,370 total cases and 6,579 total deaths. The state’s nursing homes and long-term care facilities have reported 20,689 total infections across 676 facilities in 50 counties, including Allegheny. Nearly 70% of the state’s reported deaths have occurred at these facilities. About 6,395 confirmed cases of COVID-19 are among the state’s health care workers. More than 634,000 residents have tested negative for the virus as of Friday.
