Allegheny County reported 96 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, its largest single-day increase since the county started reporting the coronavirus case count in March. The county reported zero new deaths and one new hospitalization Sunday. The county now reports a total of 2,568 cases, 186 deaths and 382 past and present hospitalizations.

Sunday’s report of new record number of daily coronavirus cases came after another record-setting day on Saturday, when the country reported 90 new COVID-19 infections.

The median age of the new cases reported Sunday was 27.

Allegheny County moved to the “green phase” of the reopening on June 5.

Pennsylvania health officials reported 505 new cases Sunday as well as three new deaths. The state now has 85,496 total cases and 6,606 total deaths. More than 657,486 residents have tested negative for the virus as of Sunday.

On Friday afternoon, in a statement the county health department said the 244 new cases reported this week were “overwhelmingly among younger people who were traveling, visiting bars and restaurants, and out in the community.”

Of the people who tested positive this week, a number of them reported going to bars and restaurants recently. Fifteen bars and restaurants were associated with new cases in interviews by the Department of Health, and five were reported multiple times.

Other people who tested positive who were contacted by the county’s tracing team reported traveling to a number of places throughout the country, including Myrtle Beach, Houston, Nashville and multiple cities in Florida, and a small number reported going to church, family get-togethers, activities with their children, or protests.
