For the third day in a row, Allegheny County has set a new record for single-day increases in COVID-19 infections — this time shattering past marks. The 233 infections announced Thursday brings the county’s total case count to 3,103.

The county said in a statement that while it expected an increase in cases, Thursday’s increase was “larger than expected.” The county added that it expects case numbers will “significantly increase” Friday.

County health officials also reported no new fatalities and four hospitalizations. To date, the county has had 187 COVID-related deaths and 401 past and present hospitalizations.

The ages for the county’s newest cases range from 6 months to 99 years old, with 29 the median age.

Pennsylvania reported 832 new cases and 25 additional fatalities Thursday, bringing the statewide case count to 88,074 and 6,712 deaths.

Gov. Tom Wolf said Thursday that it is “critical” that Pennsylvanians take his order to wear masks seriously, in advance of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Pennsylvania Health Department Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine issued an order Wednesday requiring the use of masks almost any time that a resident leaves their home. This includes while visiting businesses, working indoors, using public transit or being in any other enclosed space with people who are not in a person’s household.
