Pittsburgh AKAs hold ZOOM-BA Dance Party online to improve mental, physical health

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter in Pittsburgh informed the New Pittsburgh Courier that the coronavirus pandemic didn’t stop them from recently hosting a ZOOM-BA Dance Party on Zoom, May 16.

The guest instructor was LaShauna “Sha” Harper.

During these unprecedented times, the Women’s Healthcare and Wellness committee wanted to continue their plans for a heart healthy event and moved to a virtual platform. The event raised awareness about chronic diseases and conditions that impact African American women such as heart disease. Social media was used to advertise the event and attracted 102 registered participants locally and from other states. Through this event, the AKAs encouraged the community to increase their heart rate, shift their energy and boost their mood by de-stressing and improving their overall mental and physical health. The ZOOM-BA Dance Party lasted 45 minutes. ZOOM-BA movements were planned so that all age levels could participate.

Prizes were dished out, too. One lucky participant won a self-care basket that was complete with Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, skin care products, a candle, facemasks, and a daily inspiration boxed set. This was a free event, the AKAs told the Courier, but donations were accepted. Three hundred twenty-five dollars was raised.

All proceeds went towards medical professionals on the frontlines in Pennsylvania and New York City. The virtual event was coordinated by Chalese Floyd and Te’ona Williams.
