Allegheny County reports 215 new COVID infections Saturday

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] announced 215 new COVID-19 infections Saturday, the 12th consecutive triple-digit daily increase in reported cases.

Allegheny County’s total number of COVID-19 infections now stands at 4,762 and its newest cases are among patients ranging in age from 1 month to 86 years old. The median age of the patients is 33.

The county’s death toll increased by one on Saturday, now totaling 198. The ages of those who have died range from 23 to 103 and represent a median age of 84. Past and present hospitalizations in the county also rose to 456 overnight, an increase of six.

The total number of COVID-19 infections statewide reached 94,689 on Saturday after the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 813 new cases.

The state health department announced 17 additional deaths Saturday, bringing the total to 6,897.

Pennsylvania as of Thursday saw a seven-day increase of 4,914 COVID-19 infections, a rise from last week’s seven-day increase of 4,359, Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration announced Friday. Pennsylvania has an overall percent-positivity rate of 4.4%, but Allegheny County’s rate of 7.9% is the second-highest in the state.

Health officials have noticed a large increase in COVID-19 infections among younger residents, particularly those 19 to 24 years old, the state health department said in a press release. The majority of deaths in the state are among residents aged 65 and older.
