Pennsylvania COVID case count tops 100,000; deaths total 7,007

Allegheny County cases rise to more than 6,000

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] on Saturday reported 763 infections and 15 fatalities, bringing the statewide tally to 100,241 cases and 7,007 deaths.

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 135 new COVID-19 infections Saturday, bringing the total case count to 6,125. Positive test results span from July 3 to 17.

The department also reported one additional COVID-related fatality, but no new hospitalizations. To date, there have been 207 deaths and 507 past or present hospitalizations.

The COVID-related fatalities occurred in individuals from 23 to 103 years old, with a median age of 84, county health officials said. The most recently reported fatality, of an 81-year-old individual, occurred on July 9.

According to state numbers released Friday, Allegheny County had a percent-positivity rate of 7.5%, outpacing the state rate of 4.4%. Nearby counties also had higher rates, including Beaver County at 8.2%, Washington County at 6.2% and Indiana County at 6.1%.

Meanwhile, a ban on indoor dining in Allegheny County was rescinded Friday, replaced by an order allowing for indoor restaurant dining at 25% capacity.

Under the order, dine-in seating areas at bars, restaurants and private catered events must be closed by 11 p.m., though takeout can continue later.

Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday urged Congress to quickly provide financial relief to the restaurant industry by passing the RESTAURANTS Act, a bill that would provide $120 billion to help independent restaurants with the economic challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding would be available to restaurants or drinking establishments that are not publicly traded or part of a chain with 20 or more locations doing business under the same name. If passed, the funds could be used for payroll, benefits, mortgage, rent, protective equipment, food or other costs.
