Allegheny County reports 172 new COVID-19 cases Monday; the state is nearing 102,000 cases

The Allegheny County Department of Health [ACHD] reported 172 COVID-19 infections Monday, bringing the total case count since March 14 to 6,435 cases.

The new cases span from July 3 through July 19 from 2,173 tests, resulting in a 7.9% positivity rate.

ACHD also reported four additional hospitalizations and no new fatalities. To date, there have been 208 deaths and 512 past and present hospitalizations.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 711 infections and three fatalities Monday, bringing the statewide case count to 101,738 and 7,018 deaths.

The 172 cases Allegheny announced Monday eclipsed the 55 infections Philadelphia County reported.

Although each region of the state has seen a significant increase in cases among younger Pennsylvanians – specifically 19- to 24-year-olds – Southwestern Pennsylvania, which includes Pittsburgh, has seen the greatest spike in this age group: from roughly 5% of cases in April to nearly 21% so far in July.

Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing 68.4% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.
