COVID-19 cases in Allegheny County increased by 146 Saturday, according to the county health department.

The new cases were from tests taken between July 7 and 24.

The county has now reported 7,161 COVID-19 infections since March 14. The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] also confirmed one additional death and four hospitalizations on Saturday, bringing those totals to 222 and 577, respectively.

The individual who died from COVID-19 was 93 years old, the county said. The county’s new infections are among residents who are between 2 and 98 years old, with a median age of 41.

County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,054 cases Saturday, bringing the statewide total to 106,625. The state also announced 13 additional deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19 fatalities to 7,114.

The majority of hospitalizations and deaths have been among residents aged 65 years old or older, though the state continues to see “significant increases” in COVID-19 infections among younger populations, according to a press release.

Pennsylvania is looking to increase both its capacity and turnaround time for COVID-19 tests, Wolf said at a press conference Friday at Lancaster Health Center. The state is “paying the price” for spikes in COVID-19 infections across the country, he said, as national testing services sometimes take upwards of two weeks to return a test result.

The state is also looking to expand its number of testing sites beyond the 440 it has now.

Flattening the state’s rate of COVID-19 infections again will be the result of all residents practicing social distancing, wearing masks and washing their hands, Wolf said. Pennsylvanians are foregoing enjoyable activities, such as attending games and visiting restaurants, but they must do so, he said.

“Right now [the state is] trying to hold back a wave,” Wolf said on Friday. “We want to nip this in the bud, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
