The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] on Friday reported an increase of 97 COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of cases reported since mid-March to 8,709.
The positive cases were reported out of a pool of 1,897 tests and are among residents between the ages of 1 and 86 years old. The test results are dated from July 14 through Aug. 6.
The county also confirmed six deaths and eight hospitalizations on Friday. Since March 14, the county has seen 257 deaths and 721 past and present hospitalizations related to COVID-19. Of the newly reported deaths, five are among residents in their 80s and one in their 90s. Four of the deaths are connected to long-term care facilities.
Pennsylvania’s total number of confirmed or probable COVID-19 infections rose on Friday to 117,279, an increase of 758 from the day before, according to the state Department of Health. The statewide death toll also rose by 15 on Friday, with fatalities now totaling 7,297.
Of the 148,658 COVID-19 tests administered between July 31 and Aug. 6, 5,443 came back positive. To date, more than 1.1 million Pennsylvanians have tested negative for the virus.
Gov. Tom Wolf on Friday urged Congressional Republicans to pass an extension of the federal unemployment program providing Pennsylvanians with $600 in additional weekly benefits through the CARES Act.
An extension of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation [FPUC] program, which ended July 25, has the support of the U.S. House of Representatives but has not yet received approval from the Senate. “Pennsylvanians deserve all of the support possible during this crisis, and they need this benefit right now,” Wolf said in a press release.
