Allegheny County reported 13 new COVID-related fatalities on Wednesday. The deaths occurred between July 25 and Aug. 11.

All of the deaths reported Wednesday were among people 60 and older, and nine of the fatalities were related to long-term care facilities, which include nursing homes.

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] also reported 70 new COVID-19 infections Wednesday, bringing the total case count to 9,078 infections since March 14.

The new cases come from tests conducted from Aug. 3 through Aug. 11 from 1,775 tests and range in age from 6 to 96 years with the median age of 45.

Nearly 60% of the new cases were in patients younger than 50.

The county reported one new hospitalization.

To date, there have been 273 deaths and 738 past and present hospitalizations in the county.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 849 new infections and 33 fatalities Wednesday, bringing the statewide case tally to 121,130 and 7,385 COVID-related deaths.

“The mitigation efforts in place now are essential as the new school year approaches and we work to ensure our children can get back to learning,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said in a press release.

The majority of hospitalized patients and deaths are among Pennsylvanians 65 and older.

Each region of the state has seen a significant increase in cases among younger Pennsylvanians, specifically 19- to 24-year-olds. Southwestern Pennsylvania, which includes Pittsburgh has seen one of the greatest spikes in this age group. In April, roughly 5% of cases in the region were among 19- to 24-year-olds. So far in August, the age group represents 17% of COVID infections.

Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing 68% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.

Roughly 8,749, or 7.2%, of all infections, are among healthcare workers.
