The Allegheny County Department of Health [ACHD] reported 90 additional COVID-19 infections and five COVID-related fatalities Friday, bringing the tally to 9,282 cases and 283 deaths since March 14.
The new cases come from 1,237 tests conducted from July 31 through Aug. 13. Two out of three of the new cases were among people younger than 50. The new fatalities were patients in their 70s and 80s and occurred between July 31 through Aug. 12. Three of the five fatalities were related to residents in long-term care facilities.
County health officials also reported 11 additional hospitalizations.
To date, there have been 766 past and present hospitalizations in the county.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 829 new infections and 36 fatalities Friday, bringing the statewide counts to 122,950 cases and 7,445 deaths.
The state’s largest population center, Philadelphia County, reported 147 infections.
Each region of the state has seen a significant increase in cases among younger Pennsylvanians, specifically 19 to 24 year olds. Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing 68% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.
Roughly 8,826, or 7.2% of all infections, are among healthcare workers. County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.
Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 Response Task Force for Health Disparity has released a report analyzing health disparities among Pennsylvania residents exacerbated by the pandemic and concluding that Pennsylvania must address housing, criminal justice and food insecurity to mitigate health disparities among marginalized populations.
The report, presented to Gov. Tom Wolf this week, highlights six policy areas for addressing health disparities that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated. Wolf and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman shared details of the report during a press conference Thursday.
Though COVID-19 is included in the task force’s title, the report’s recommendations address broader disparities in the state and the country, Wolf said.
