Wolf renews emergency declaration to combat coronavirus pandemic

The Allegheny County Department of Health [ACHD] reported 29 new COVID-19 infections Tuesday and four COVID-related fatalities. The newly reported cases bring the total count since March 14 to 10,376 infections.

The majority of the new cases come from 954 tests conducted from Aug. 24 through Aug. 31, with one specimen from Aug. 6. The new fatalities were among patients in their 70s and 80s and two are associated with a long-term care facility, a category which includes nursing homes. All the fatalities were between Aug. 28 and 29.

To date, the county has had 334 deaths and 975 hospitalizations.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 770 new infections and 18 fatalities Tuesday, bringing the statewide tallies to 134,795 cases and 7,691 deaths.

Each region of the state has seen a significant increase in cases among younger Pennsylvanians, specifically 19 to 24 year olds. Southwestern Pennsylvania, which includes Pittsburgh, however, has seen one of the greatest spikes in this age group. In April, roughly 5% of cases in the region were among 19 to 24 year olds. So far in August, the age group represented roughly 13% of new COVID infections, but that number had been as high as 21% in July.

Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing 67.5% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.

Roughly 9,665, or 7.2% of all infections, are among healthcare workers, a percent that has remained fairly steady throughout the summer surge.

County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.

Late Monday, Gov. Tom Wolf renewed, for an additional 90 days, the emergency disaster declaration he first declared on March 6. “We are going to continue to combat the health and economic effects of COVID-19, and the renewal of my disaster declaration will provide us with resources and support needed for this effort,” Wolf said in a press release Tuesday.
