New COVID case counts released for Allegheny County and the state, combining Sunday and Monday

by PublicSource Reporters

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 116 new COVID-19 infections and no new COVID-related fatalities for Monday and Sunday combined. The newly reported cases bring the total count since March 14 to 11,779 cases of COVID-19.

To date, the county has had 373 deaths and 1,158 people hospitalized because of the virus.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 234 new cases and 23 fatalities Monday, in addition to 733 new cases and 25 fatalities reported Sunday, bringing the statewide tallies to 150,812 cases and 8,004 COVID-related deaths.

Each region of the state has seen a significant increase in cases among younger Pennsylvanians, specifically 19- to 24-year-olds. In April, roughly 5% of cases in Southwestern Pennsylvania were among 19- to 24-year-olds. The age group represents 29% of new COVID infections so far in September.

Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing about 67% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.

Roughly 10,392, or 7% of all infections, are among healthcare workers, a percentage that has remained fairly steady throughout the summer.

County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.

During a Monday press conference, Gov. Tom Wolf said his veto of House Bill 2787 would come later in the day. The bill gives school districts the power to make decisions surrounding fall sports and activities, including the presence of fans at sporting events. “School districts, they’re going to do what they do. But there’s a virus out there, and that virus really likes it when you bring a lot of people together,” he said. “Apparently, the folks who voted for this decided they just wanted to ignore that reality. I can’t. And I don’t think Pennsylvanians can afford to ignore that reality so I’m going to veto it.”
