Blue Is Back: Joe Biden is victorious in Michigan with key swing-state win

Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden did it big in Michigan.

On the heels of an Election Day visit by his running mate U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris in Southfield and Detroit Tuesday, Biden sealed the deal with a victory on the voter front in Michigan, a swing state, according to an article from the New York Post. CNN and NBC called the race first on Wednesday afternoon, the article said.

The presidential nominee racked up an additional 16 electoral votes with the win, taking another state presidential nominee and embattled incumbent Trump won in 2016 and closing the gap between him and the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

The close race was recently called into Wednesday–Michigan was one of several battleground states without a definite winner on Election Night, the article stated.

The decision was made despite Trump’s re-election campaign announcing a lawsuit Wednesday to stop the counting of Michigan votes until campaign observers were given “meaningful access” to the process, according to the article.

Races also came down to the wire in other swing states, including Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin — where the Trump campaign demanded a recount even before the state was called for Biden, the article added.

This Midwest region win would mark an important breakthrough for Biden, after Trump won the Great Lakes State in 2016.

Biden entered Election Day with a 4.2 percentage point lead in Michigan, according to RealClearPolitics’ average of polls.

In this state, which has been strongly impacted by the coronavirus, the election was hugely seen as a referendum on the Trump administration’s response to the pandemic, according to the article.

Trump constantly sold himself to working-class Michigan voters by taking digs at Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, whose tight lockdown orders have, in the estimation of Republican critics, smothered the state’s economy, according to the article.

In the wake of an attempt by anti-government agitators to abduct Whitmer, Biden blamed the plot on Trump’s campaign divisiveness.

“The character of the country is on the ballot; our character is on the ballot. Look at us closely,” Biden said during the final presidential debate, to which Michiganders listened, examined, and responded, earnestly.
