On Friday, COVID-19 cases both locally and statewide saw an increase, amid a growing surge across the country.
The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 239 new COVID-19 infections Friday and four new COVID-related fatalities. The newly reported cases bring the total count since March 14 to 16,838 infections.
Over half of the new cases came from 1,668 new PCR tests conducted from over the past nine days. The county labeled the remaining positive cases as probable ones, most of them confirmed through positive antigen tests. The new infections were among patients ages one year to 99 years, with the median age being 34. Roughly 69% of new cases were people younger than 50.
To date, the county has had 446 deaths and 1,505 people hospitalized because of the virus.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 3,384 new infections and 38 fatalities Friday, marking the highest daily increase in cases yet and bringing the statewide tallies to 223,950 cases and 8,975 COVID-related deaths.
