The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 10,170 new COVID-19 cases and 169 new deaths Tuesday, bringing the statewide totals to 436,614 total cases and 11,542 total deaths.
There are currently 5,421 individuals hospitalized in Pennsylvania with the virus, about 21% of whom are in intensive care units. Individuals 65 or older represent the largest share of those hospitalized as well as most who have died from the virus.
The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 693 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday.
Allegheny County Jail Warden Orlando Harper reported in a Tuesday press release that there are currently 29 employees and 27 inmates in the jail that are COVID-19 positive.
Gov. Tom Wolf didn’t waste time giving an exhaustive and alarming rundown of the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic in Pennsylvania and nationally at the start of a Monday press briefing.
He referenced the last round of mitigation efforts announced two weeks ago — which increasingly restricted capacity at both indoor and outdoor events — and noted that the pandemic has only gotten more dire since then.
He noted that more nurses have died during the pandemic than in World War I and described the hospitals in the state as pushed to their limits. He introduced a nurse who works for Hershey Medical Center, who said nurses “go home, cry in the shower, cry in their car, alone, because of the desperation and exhaustion they feel.”
After delivering this stark warning, Wolf announced no new orders or mitigation efforts, instead continuing to urge individuals to stay home as much as possible, wear masks and socially distance.
“If you didn’t know before how urgent the situation is, please pay attention now,” Wolf said. “We must stop the spread of COVID-19, and to do that, we have to all act now.”
When asked by reporters about a potential state shutdown or measures that would close businesses, Wolf said there is nothing to announce right now.
