Eight new Allegheny County COVID-19 deaths, as push for vaccination continues

by PublicSource Reporters

As many residents await vaccination, the Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] confirmed 376 new COVID-19 cases and eight new deaths Wednesday.

The new cases, dated from Jan. 5 to Jan. 26, came from individuals two months old to 98 years old, with a median age of 45.

The deaths, from Dec. 5 to Jan. 26, occured in one person in their 50s, two in their 70s, three in their 80s and two in their 90s. ACHD associates five of these new deaths with long-term care facilities.

To date, ACHD has confirmed 68,087 cases, 1,278 deaths from the virus and 4,112 past and present hospitalizations.

Through Tuesday, 770,965 vaccine doses have been administered in Pennsylvania. This includes Pennsylvanians vaccinated through the federal government’s partnership with CVS. The state only recently received this data.

Across the state, 139,542 people have received both doses required for full vaccination.

Gov. Tom Wolf said, during a press conference on Tuesday, that the state needs 8 million more vaccines from the federal government in order to ensure that all residents under the expanded 1A phase can receive a vaccine.

Currently under the expanded 1A phase, which now includes residents 65 and older, pregnant women and the immunocompromised, there are about 4 million residents in need of a vaccine.

“It is incredibly disappointing that the national vaccine supply is extremely limited, because states rely on the federal government to get the vaccine,” Wolf said. “My administration is fighting to make sure Pennsylvania gets our fair share of doses. Our goal remains to ensure every Pennsylvanian who wants a vaccine can get one.”
