The Allegheny County Health Department on Thursday reported 135 COVID deaths, a significant deviation from the typical daily increase that the department attributed to a backlog at the state level.

The new deaths reported are dated from Dec. 16 to Jan. 24. The deaths include one person in their 40s, three people in their 50s, 11 people in their 60s, 29 people in their 70s, 46 people in their 80s, 40 people in their 90s and five people were over 100 years old.

Seventy deaths were associated with long-term care facilities.

Another 358 new COVID-19 cases were also reported in the county.

The new cases — from positive tests dated Nov. 5 to Jan. 27  — include individuals ranging in age from 1 year to 97 years old, with a median age of 41.

To date, the Allegheny County Health Department has reported 68,445 cases, 1,412 deaths from the virus and 4,199 past and present hospitalizations.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed on Thursday 6,036 new COVID-19 cases and 198 new deaths. The increased number of cases reported by the department is due to backlogged antigen testing data from urgent care centers.

Since the start of the pandemic, Pennsylvania has reported 824,405 cases and 21,303 deaths.

Nursing and personal care home residents and employees represent about 9% of the state’s cases and about 52% of the state’s deaths. Healthcare workers represent about 2.8% of the state’s cases.

Through Jan. 27, at least 837,817 vaccine doses have been administered in Pennsylvania. There are 519,419 people who have received one dose of the vaccine and 159,199 people who have received both doses of the vaccine.

Allegheny County officials acknowledged the frustrating experiences of those attempting to make vaccination appointments following the expansion of eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine in Pennsylvania, and asked for patience.

“I know there is a lot of frustration out there,” said Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] Director Dr. Debra Bogen during a press briefing Wednesday. “Our clinics are filling up fast, the registration system from the state is confusing, and sometimes it doesn’t work. You’re wondering when you can get a vaccine and how you’ll get a vaccine. I really do hear you. We all hear you. We are frustrated here, too.”
