Willa “Kitty” Chandler, first African American meter maid police officer of Pittsburgh dies at 101

Willa Chandler, age 101, of Hill District, Pittsburgh departed on Friday, January 15, 2021. Beloved Aunt of Mary Farr, Great Aunt of Gerri Warren Merrick (Leon), Norman Gerard Warren and the Jackson, Farr, Wesley and Ali families.

“Miss Kitty” as she was affectionately known was the first African American meter maid police officer of Pittsburgh. She wore badge #1.

She later retired from the Prothonotary’s Office.

In 2009 on September 15, it was declared Willa “Kitty” Chandler Day in the city of Pittsburgh. She was given the key to the city for contributions to society and presented with a Resolution by the late Council member Tonya Payne and eight other council members including now Mayor William Peduto.

A life long legacy member of Macedonia Baptist Church she was a faithful member of the Trustee Board, Gospel Chorus and numerous other ministries over the years.

Arrangements were entrusted to Samuel J. Jones Funeral Home 2644 Wylie Ave. Pgh., PA 15219 where the funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 26 , 2021. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in her name to the Macedonia Church Scholarship Fund, 2225 Bedford Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
