Allegheny County reports 311 new COVID cases, launches map of vaccination sites

On Monday, the Allegheny County Health Department confirmed 311 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in the past 48 hours.

The new cases include individuals ranging in age from 5 months to 99 years old, with a median age of 31. The person who died was in their 50s.

To date, the Allegheny County Health Department has reported 96,168 cases, 1,859 deaths from the virus and 6,604 past and present hospitalizations.

In an effort to increase vaccination, the county on Friday released a map of vaccination sites. The map includes information on location, registration and the types of vaccine available. Dr. Debra Bogen, director of the county health department, said the county is “trying to make it as easy as possible for as many people as possible to get vaccinated.”

Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] Director Dr. Debra Bogen said Wednesday that while the county is still in a fourth wave of COVID-19 transmission, daily caseloads are starting to slowly decline.

“We have some encouraging movement, but, unfortunately, we still have a long way to go before I can report strictly good news,” Bogen said in a press briefing.

The first 10 days of April, the department recorded about 425 new cases a day, but this last week amounted to around 350 cases a day, Bogen said.

There are now more available vaccination appointments than there are people signing up for them, according to Bogen. Some clinics are offering walk-in vaccinations. College students who plan to return home to Allegheny County with only one shot will be able to schedule their second shot with ACHD because of the increased availability.

Almost 57% of adults in Allegheny County have received a shot so far, according to Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. He encouraged everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated.

“I tell you, what the vaccine really is about, it’s about freedom,” Fitzgerald said at the briefing. “For the last year plus, year and a month, most of us have been afraid to go certain places, because in the back of our mind, ‘oh, what if I run into somebody who’s been exposed,’ or ‘I could get COVID.’ The vaccine takes that all away. You get the vaccine, you don’t have to worry about it.”
