During a ceremony that “honors the best journalism in Western Pennsylvania and surrounding counties in Ohio and West Virginia,” the staff of the New Pittsburgh Courier will be recognized for their service to the journalism industry.

At the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s 57th Annual Golden Quill Awards, to be held, Sept. 28, at the Rivers Casino Event Center, the Courier will be presented with the professional organization’s Service to Journalism Award.

“The New Pittsburgh Courier has been selected for the Press Club’s Service to Journalism award for a number of reasons,” stated Press Club President Helen Fallon, professor emeritus, journalism, and former Honors Program director at Point Park University. “First, for service to Pittsburgh’s Black communities as the newspaper has advocated for its readers to take the pandemic seriously. It has been on the forefront of first urging readers to wear masks and then get vaccinated. Before the crisis and since, the newspaper also has celebrated the achievements of Black citizens and addressed broader community threats such as gun violence.”

Courier Editor and Publisher Rod Doss said: “On behalf of the talented and professional New Pittsburgh Courier team, I thank the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania for this special recognition of the Service to Journalism Award to be presented at the Golden Quill Awards ceremony.”

For more than 110 years, the Courier has been serving the Greater Pittsburgh area and, at one time, the country, with its national editions through its coverage of news that impacts the African American community, and its celebration of emerging leaders who are making a difference inside and outside the boardroom.
