Actor Michael K. Williams dies at 54

Actor Michael K. Williams, well-known for his acting chops in HBO’s The Wire, died at 54 years old over the Labor Day holiday, ESSENCE Magazine reported.

Williams, according to the NY Post, Williams’ nephew discovered his body in his Brooklyn apartment on Monday afternoon, September 7. Close Sources believe that Williams possibly died by a drug overdose.

Earlier this year in March, Williams earned a Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Montrose Freeman in Lovecraft Country, according to the article.

“I made a decision very early on in my career that the two things I will go for when I’m asked to do a role is I will look for the truth and I will tell that truth with as much compassion and as much empathy as I can,” Williams said at virtual press interviews after his prestigious win.

Williams worked with HBO on other shows like Boardwalk Empire and the biopic Bessie, which he garnered a Primetime Emmy nomination, according to the article.

Earlier this summer, Williams was a part of a BET Awards tribute to DMX, who at 50 years old, died of a drug overdose in April 9, the article added.

The actor was a native New Yorker, born November 22, 1966, in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to a mother from Nassau, Bahamas, and a father from South Carolina.
