TALI’s Executive Leadership Academy graduates its third cohort. Ongoing effort to educate Black leaders, position them for professional advancement

 

On Saturday, Sept. 18, The Advanced Leadership Institute (TALI) and Carnegie Mellon University were pleased to present 28 cohort members as graduates of the 2021 Executive Leadership Academy, the New Pittsburgh Courier has learned. The Executive Leadership Academy (ELA) is TALI’s signature program and part of an ongoing effort to educate Black leaders and position them for professional advancement. The graduation ceremony was held at Carnegie Mellon University and included a keynote speech by Herman Bulls, Vice Chairman, Americas/JLL Washington.

Other program highlights included an introduction of the speaker by Dr. Diamonte Walker, 2021 ELA Graduate and Deputy Executive Director of the Urban Redevelopment Authority; and cohort reflections by Morton Stanfield, 2021 ELA Graduate and Senior Vice President, Community Development, Dollar Bank. Special recognition was also given to the TALI executive mentors by Tammy Spencer Bay, 2021 ELA Graduate, Regional Co-Chair of Impact Pittsburgh, and Vice President/Business Tech Liaison, BNY Mellon. Graduates were welcomed as new TALI alumni By Marlon Ferguson, 2019 ELA Graduate and Regional Director/SWPA Office of U.S. Senator Bob Casey, and as CMU alumni by Susan Caplan, Ed.D., Director, Executive Education Global Open Enrollment Programs, Carnegie Mellon University Tepper School of Business.

Each year, experienced Black leaders are selected to participate in the Executive Leadership Academy, a seven-month,  world-class executive education program through Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. The program provides leadership development training and addresses the specific challenges that Black professionals face in the workplace. Cohort members are also matched with a professional coach and an executive mentor to help them build relationships and maximize their experience.

“I am pleased that we have continued this much-needed effort to prepare Black leaders for advancement in this region; the Executive Leadership Academy allows us to recognize and empower top talent, and this year’s graduates are outstanding examples from our communities,” said Evan Frazier, President and CEO of The Advanced Leadership Institute.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this movement that seeks to bring our region forward in the advancement of Black leaders. This year’s graduates are inspiring, and they encourage us that the path forward is bright,” added Marsha Jones, The Advanced Leadership Institute Board Chair and Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at PNC.
