Shady Side Academy: How we lead

ACHIEVE! School Choice Guide

At Shady Side Academy, every day is an opportunity to grow into the leaders of tomorrow.

At all four campuses, Shady Side teachers create active learning environments and instill effective collaboration skills in our students. They cultivate strong leaders who solve problems, adapt to change, motivate others and make a positive impact on the world.

Our youngest students learn through purposeful play, exercising their imaginations while developing critical social and cognitive abilities. Students participate in dynamic learning activities, deepening their understanding of the curriculum and enhancing their love of school. Interdisciplinary learning opportunities instill confidence and creativity, such as our Fourth Grade Greek Museum, where students conduct research, write speeches, design costumes and practice public speaking.

In our Middle School, we present a challenging curriculum with an emphasis on inquiry, global awareness and responsibility. Students develop as communicators and as scholars – gaining valuable writing skills and effective study habits. Teachers encourage students to innovate and experiment with new solutions regardless of the outcome, giving them the independence and freedom to take intellectual risks.

Senior School students complete a rigorous curriculum that prepares them to excel in college, and have the opportunity to pursue individual passions through independent studies, senior projects and our Social Innovators Program. In addition to traditional leadership roles, Shady Side gives students a voice in the school and allows them to lead alongside faculty members, for example, as voting members of the Academic Policy Committee and academic department associates.
