Danya’le Northern’s entrepreneurship journey began as a necessity.
“My daughter had sickle cell, and I needed another stream of income because I constantly had to quit my jobs when we were always in the hospital,” said Northern. “I was like, what am I going to do, and I chose candles. Me and my daughter used to make them together in the house; one thing led to another, and folks were like, you should sell these.”
Northern Scents Candle Company handcrafts all-natural soy candles and several other handcrafted scented items. They create unique scents with top sellers like pineapple sage, vanilla pineapple margarita, and black linen.
“I also let my customers pick what they want and create scents off that too, so there are scents that I offer that you wouldn’t get anywhere else,” said Northern. Catering to clients has been a joy for Northern and has endeared her to her base.
“Finding customers and the relationships that I have built with my customers that keeps my business going was one of the greatest parts of it all. I didn’t think that I would have repetitive customers. I don’t need to promote as much because my regulars keep coming back. They are who really keep me standing.”
As far as new and potential customers, Northern requests patience and realistic expectations. She said sometimes people tend to compare her small business to Bath & Body Works or Bed Bath & Beyond.
“I don’t compare myself to these companies. They are not my competition…We are a home-based candle business that likes to make our customers happy. We like to do custom blends. We love to teach people how to make candles. We want to be family,” said Northern. “When you see that Northern Star on the candles, we want you to know that’s us; hand-poured, all-natural organic candles made with love.”
