The 2022 Spirit of King Honorees, presented by the Port Authority, were Dr. Sylvester Pace and Bernard H. Jones Sr. The virtual ceremony was held on Jan. 13.

Dr. Pace was the longtime executive director of NEED, the Negro Educational Emergency Drive, who tirelessly worked to better Black Pittsburgh youth through college scholarships and other programs.

Jones was the driving force behind the creation of the local POISE Foundation. “We must build our institutions for our children’s children,” is a phrase he would always echo, as POISE grew from an initial capitalization of $164,000 to a present value in excess of $11 million.

Dr. Pace passed away in 2012. Jones passed away in 2001.

The New Pittsburgh Courier is a sponsor of the annual Spirit of King award.
