With Earth Day right around the corner, you might wonder what actions you and your family can take to reduce your energy consumption and disposable products. Doing so can save you money and help the planet. Plus, you can teach your kids some home maintenance and conservation lessons.

Duquesne Light Co. is committed to investing in renewable energy to do its part in supporting the planet and usage of natural resources. For example, DLC customers can connect qualified renewable energy systems to the company’s distribution network. In addition, DLC’s Home Energy Center provides customers with resources that include rebates, savings, home energy usage insights, and more.

For individuals, ignore any misconceptions that taking steps to help the planet has to be time-consuming, expensive, or messy. The truth is, some simple changes will benefit your family and the earth.

Cook Consciously

As the weather warms up this spring, keep in mind what times you cook meals and how you cook them. Turning on the stove or oven can heat your house, creating a greater need for air conditioning, which in turn uses more energy and money. Consider cooking early in the morning or later in the evening, when the weather is cooler. Try using appliances like a toaster oven or air fryer, which cook without heating your home. Or, search the internet for good no-cook recipes that will cut energy usage and provide a refreshing meal for your family in the warm weather.

Lighten Up

One of the most straightforward things you can do to reduce your energy consumption is switch to LED light bulbs. Modern LED bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs while still providing the same amount of light. They might be a bit more expensive up front, but they also last longer than traditional light bulbs—meaning you’ll save money over time.

Power On

Many people think that if they’re not using their electronic devices, they’re not using energy. In truth, if your devices are plugged in, they’re still leeching electricity from the outlets, wasting power and money. Switch to a smart power strip that will completely shut off the appliances plugged into it when they’re not in use.

Take Stock of Your Home

Most of our homes waste energy without even thinking about it. Poorly functioning heating units and air conditioners—or doors and windows that aren’t sealed properly—lead to energy waste because the system has to work harder than it would otherwise. Perform regular service on your systems and properly weatherize your home to prevent this waste and improve your energy bills while helping the planet.

Duquesne Light Co. offers customers rebates on many energy-saving devices, including air conditioners, occupancy sensors, dehumidifiers, insulation, and furnaces. If you purchase an energy-saving device, fill out the online rebate form to start saving today!

Take a Walk

Driving is hard on the environment. Oil production processes and the exhaust from cars as we drive create smog and other air quality problems. Plus, buying gas to make vehicles run gets expensive. Celebrate Earth Day by riding your bike or walking to do your errands or visit a friend. You’ll save money, help the planet, and get a little exercise.

Invest in Reusables

Disposable containers, dishes, and packaging are the main contributor to landfills and pollution. Take the opportunity on Earth Day to invest in some reusable items. Try silicone resealable bags instead of plastic food storage bags. Or, try out a collapsible aluminum straw that you can use in place of plastic ones. Like LED bulbs, these items may cost more upfront, but you’ll save money in the long run by reusing them rather than buying an endless supply of disposable items.

Go Paperless

Many of us get piles of paper mail every day. And those bills, notices, and forms pile up on our desks. Set aside a few hours on Earth Day to sign up for paperless services from your various providers—save a tree while cutting back on your office clutter.

Earth Day comes once per year. By implementing some simple changes that last, you can make an impact and help the plant while also protecting your pocketbook. Try out a few of these suggestions and see how easy it can be to access the many benefits of going green!
