Smith, Carter, Payne usher in 2022 Connie Hawkins League HOF inductions, May 28

by Bill Neal, For New Pittsburgh Courier

:10—The nationally and internationally recognized Connie Hawkins Pro-Am/NCAA Summer Basketball League will present the 2022 Hall of Fame Class on Saturday, May 28, at noon at the DoubleTree Hotel in Monroeville. The event is coupled with the 48th Annual Willie “Pops” Stargell MVP Awards recognizing those members of the community that represent the “We Are Fam-i-lee” credo as was established by the late, great Willie Stargell.

:08—Willie Stargell Inductees – Brice Flenory, James Watts, Mayor Pauline Calabrese, Chief Scott Schubert, Amirah Gibbons, Jerry Chippinelli, Guy Junker, Joy Bey, Monica Malik, Ulice Payne and Manny Sanguillen.

:07—Once again, and as my partner and baseball purist Kevin Cameron says, we’ve been sold a large pot of fool’s gold, we’ve been hoodwinked, we’ve been bamboozled! Sorry, my bad, I slipped into Malcolm #1 – As you veteran baseball people know, pitching wins games. #2 – You also know that we get it and then give it away… and generally on Fridays when it’s pay day (huh). That’s right, the intent is to get them to tease you for a moment with a live arm and then cash in or should I say cash out (huh). Don’t worry, this will be crystal clear to you tonight around midnight.

:06—Coach Saban told the truth and truth be told if you want your Pitt and Duquesne men’s basketball teams to be as great as Gonzaga, Duke, North Carolina, UCLA and Michigan State…you have to do what they do to be great. What you say? You know what, don’t feign naivete, yes you do! C’mon man, you know you know!!! Alright, text me, I’ll welcome you to the real world of college athletics. Until then stop complaining, wake up and drink the Kool-Aid.

:05—On a national level – For all you Tom Brady ring finger-kissers, you want to proclaim him the Greatest of All-Time (GOAT), do it without the three Super Bowls they stole, just ask Troy Polamalu, a man as honest as the day is long about stolen championship games…and those are the ones we know about. I’ll take Terry Bradshaw all day, everyday —4 legitimate rings—2 Super Bowl MVPs—called his own plays—a cannon for an arm —and tough as ‘steel’!!! Now shut up about it.

:04—OK, OK, OK…(Joe Pesci in “Lethal Weapon 2”)—(Do try and keep up) you want me to believe that Nikola Jokic is not only the NBA MVP last year but this year, too? No! He. Is. Not. More. Valuable. Than. Joel Embiid, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, Ja Morant, Kevin Durant or Jayson Tatum. I don’t know what’s up with that whole thing but it’s something… I am just sayin’.

:03—The record will tell I graduated in my class, not the top of my class. But even I can figure this out. Hey Lakers! Bring Phil Jackson out of retirement, you know you want to, put “Magic” back at the conversation table, take LeBron away from the conversation, bring James Harden to the Best Coast to get his ring and somehow get Damian Lillard on board and it’s “Showtime” in LA again! I am just sayin’! —FYI—the HBO Lakers show, not all it’s cracked-up to be. I am just sayin’!

:02—All together now— you have not watched 5 minutes of the new and still boring USFL, United States Football League. Feel better now?

:01—Here’s the one you just can’t let go. It’s kind of like when you see J-Lo, Halle Berry, Selena Gomez or Scarlett Johansson and you keep saying to yourself, “Why not me?” You and I both know that Colin Kaepernick is better than any backup QB in the NFL and two-thirds of the starters. Text me, I can take it. 412-628-4856.

:00—GAME OVER.
