A leaked audio recording led to the firing of a Mississippi police chief caught bragging about killings and spewing racial slurs, the Washington Post reports.

On Wednesday (July 21), Lexington, Mississippi Police Chief Sam Dobbins was ousted from his position due to incriminating audio released by the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting (MCIR).

“I shot that n—– 119 times, OK?” Dobbins says in the audio.

Dobbins was fired in a 3-2 vote by the Lexington Board of Alderman, leaving Charles Henderson to hold the interim police chief position.

On the audio tape, Dobbins was speaking with a colleague about his belief that it’s sometimes necessary to kill while policing.

The ex-police chief noted that there were multiple instances where he needed to kill people he was trying to arrest.

The Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting said it obtained the audio tape from former officer Robert Lee Hooker, the alleged colleague Dobbins was speaking with during the recording.

In the tape, Dobbins can be heard telling Hooker that he has killed 13 people during his career.

However, when reporters questioned the fired police chief about killing over a dozen individuals, Dobbins said, “That’s something we don’t discuss, period.”

The recording was first obtained from Hooker by JULIAN, a civil rights organization. Reports say the organization then shared the audio tape with the MCIR.
