PBMF Vann Media Awards Dinner is back, in-person, Aug. 24

ERVIN DYER, PH.D., Vann Media Awards Dinner Committee Chair

It’s been a few years, but the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation announced on Aug. 3 that the organization will hold its annual Vann Media Awards Dinner as an in-person event, Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center. The event begins at 6 p.m.

The theme of the evening will recognize the Black press and coverage of Africana people through the lens of the African diaspora. “Now more than ever, it is incumbent to note journalism that goes beyond the surface—and biased rhetoric—in telling stories of the human condition across the globe,” Ervin Dyer, Ph.D., Vann Media Awards Dinner Committee Chair, said in a release provided to the New Pittsburgh Courier.

In 1988, the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation established the Robert L. Vann Media Awards to honor excellence in journalism coverage of the African American community. The awards program was named in honor of the late Robert L. Vann, legendary publisher of the Pittsburgh Courier, to recognize his personal commitment to journalism and to creating a voice for the Black community.

Tickets for the dinner may be purchased until August 22 at pbmf.org. Tickets are $25 each for students, $50 for PBMF members and $60 for non-members.
