A first-of-its-kind streaming service created by, funded by, and dedicated to Black women will soon hit households across the nation.
According to People, entrepreneur Riqua Hailes Turner has announced the launch of theBW, shorthand for the Black Women Network, which aims to uplift Black women filmmakers and create space for diverse storytelling.
The groundbreaking network will be available to download on all major streaming app platforms on Sunday (September 18) and will feature six original programs along with licensed films and series through Allrites, a distribution company.
“My goal with theBW is to create a high fidelity streaming app dedicated and created for black women by Black women,” Hailes Turner said in a statement. “By creating a first-of-its-kind platform, my dream is for us to continue to gain equity in the entertainment industry by creating and owning our narratives.”
Hailes Turner lost her own distribution deal for a documentary in 2015 and now aspires to help other Black women secure funding and resources for their projects through theBW, People reports.
The entrepreneur will be collaborating with executive producer Antoinetta Hairston-Stallings, operation executive Kisha Cavette-Williams, actor and producer Novi Brown, and graphic designer Courtney Coprich, per the outlet.
Shows slated for theBW’s launch include “The Undoing,” a talk show that will discuss how to overcome adversity; “Boss AF,” a series based on the life of Bloomingdale’s shoe designer Jess Rich; Pretty For a Big Girl, a show revolving around the world of magazine publishing; and more.
The streaming service is currently priced at a monthly rate of $5.99 for IOS, tvOS, Android, AndroidTV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, XBOX One, and Samsung TV users.
