Costume designer Ruth E. Carter made history at the 2023 Oscars.
On Sunday (March 12), Carter became the first Black woman to ever win more than one Oscar after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever took home the award for Best Costume Design at the 95th Academy Awards.
She received her first Oscar for her work on the first installment of the Marvel film in 2019.
“I share this with many dedicated artists whose hands and hearts helped manifest the costumes of Wakanda and Talokan,” Carter said in her acceptance speech on Sunday. “Together we are reshaping how culture is represented.”
Wakanda Forever won Best Costume Design in a stacked category that included Elvis, Babylon, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
In her acceptance speech, Carter touched on her mother’s recent death at the age of 101, saying her “superhero” “became an ancestor.”
“Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endures, she loves, she overcomes, [and] she is every woman in this film. She is my mother,” Carter said. “Chadwick, please take care of Mom.”
