Matthew Perry, celebrated for his role as Chandler Bing in the iconic TV show Friends, has passed away at the age of 54.
Capt. Scot Williams from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide division confirmed the sad news. While the exact cause of death remains to be determined, preliminary findings suggest no foul play.
Audiences across America were familiar with Perry’s talent as he graced the screens in all 10 seasons of Friends, a beloved NBC series that delved into the lives of young adults in New York City. He shared the spotlight with renowned co-stars such as Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow.
Perry left a lasting impact on many, including Aisha Tyler, one of the few Black actresses to have a recurring role on Friends. Tyler fondly remembered Perry’s support during her initial days on the set when she grappled with stage fright.
Speaking to ET, Tyler, who portrayed Professor Charlie Wheeler in the series’ final two seasons in 2003, shared that she was incredibly nervous during her first scenes. Yet, it was Perry, known to fans as Chandler Bing, who played a significant role in calming her nerves. “After a show, as we prepared for the curtain call, Matthew Perry whispered, ‘Prepare for your life to change,’” Tyler said. “It was such a heartfelt gesture, especially at a time when I was trying not to let my anxiety get the best of me.”
Tyler emphasized the truth in Perry’s words, noting that “Friends” was television’s reigning show then. “It had a colossal following, both locally and internationally,” she remarked. “Even now, people recognize me and shout, ‘Charlie!’ or sometimes just, ‘That Black girl from Friends.’”
Chandler Bing, portrayed by Perry, was adored for his unique blend of sarcasm and humor.
Even though “Friends” premiered in 1994, it continues to resonate with newer generations and maintains its evergreen charm.
Beyond his iconic role in “Friends,” Perry’s TV career spanned almost 40 years. One of his earliest appearances was in 1979 on the police series “240-Robert,” as per IMDb records. He stepped into the shoes of Chandler Bing when he was just 24.
