Former American Idol star and Grammy award-winning singer Mandisa has died, according to TMZ. She was 47.
On Thursday (April 18), Mandisa, who competed on season 5 of American Idol, was found dead in her home in Nashville, per TMZ.
Mandisa’s father confirmed his daughter’s death, saying it was unexpected and a shock to the family, the outlet reports. Mandisa’s cause of death is currently unknown.
The singer placed 9th on American Idol’s fifth season. Following her stint on the show, Mandisa won a Grammy in 2014 for her album Overcomer.
Mandisa previously opened up about her mental health struggles, saying in 2017 that she had contemplated suicide. It’s unclear whether her mental health struggles were related to her death. According to TMZ, Mandisa had no known health issues before her death.
David Pierce, Christian radio station K-Love’s Chief Media Officer, praised Mandisa’s “kindness” and talent in the wake of her death.
“Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart. Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles,” Pierce said. “Mandisa’s struggles are over. She is with the God she sang about now. While we are saddened, Mandisa is home. We’re praying for Mandisa’s family and friends and ask you to join us.”
