The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are headed to Nigeria.
According to PEOPLE, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to visit Nigeria later this month following an invitation from the country’s Chief of Defense Staff.
The invitation comes after the 2023 Invictus Games, a sporting event designed by Prince Harry for wounded servicemen and women in recovery. Last year, the games, boasting 500 athletes across 21 nations, were held in Germany.
Markle, who in 2022 revealed she’s 43 percent Nigerian, reportedly cheered on the country’s team during the games. While spending time with the Nigerian team, Markle received a new nickname “Amira Ngozi Lolo,” with “Amira” meaning warrior princess from a legend, “Ngozi” meaning blessed, and Lolo meaning “royal wife.”
“Now, I’m not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she’s of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year,” Prince Harry quipped in his opening speech for the 2023 games.
Though the Invictus Games are set to take place in Canada in 2025, Nigeria has expressed interest in hosting a future event. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Nigeria’s acting director of defense information, said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s upcoming visit to the country will be an opportunity to discuss hosting the games in the future.
“The visit is to consolidate Nigeria’s stronghold at the game and the possibility of hosting the event in later years,” Gusau said in a statement.
The couple is also set to participate in native cultural activities and meet with various service members during their visit to Nigeria.
