Pittsburgh-area resident Michaele Crosby wasn’t even supposed to be anywhere near the Strip District on Thursday morning, Sept. 5, 2024. But she was invited by a friend to eat breakfast at Pamela’s Diner, on 21st Street. It’s a popular spot with Pittsburghers, and Crosby soon found out it’s a popular spot with political figures.
Crosby and her male friend arrived at the restaurant around 7:50 a.m. She wanted to be the first one in the doors when Pamela’s opened at 8 a.m., but she said someone else beat them to the door.
No problem. Crosby and her friend talked, ate some breakfast, and then calmly walked out the restaurant, when, all of a sudden, the sound of police cars came racing towards the restaurant.
“And then we saw two big, black SUVs pull up,” Crosby told the New Pittsburgh Courier exclusively. “We asked the police officer who was going to be getting out the car soon.”
According to Crosby, the officer said the Vice President, Kamala Harris, was in one of the SUVs.
The police were clearing people out, so Crosby and her friend got in their car and left the area. Still, for Crosby, “it felt a little excited because it was unexpected, because I wasn’t actually supposed to be there,” she said.
Turns out, the Courier confirmed late Thursday, Sept. 5, that it was actually Kamala Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who eventually emerged from the SUV. He, of course, draped with security, entered the popular Pamela’s and met with staff, took some photos, ate some breakfast with his family, stayed an hour, and then left. Other politicians have eaten at Pamela’s in the Strip, such as former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. President Obama once proclaimed Pamela’s Diner’s pancakes were some of “the best pancakes I’ve tasted in a very long time.”
As for Crosby, who is a Black woman, it’s not every day that a person eats breakfast at the same place, in the same morning, as a person who is this close to becoming the next U.S. Vice President.
Crosby then went to work, but later in the day, she stood outside the Omni William Penn Hotel, in Downtown Pittsburgh, where she learned Kamala Harris was actually staying as Harris prepares for her Sept. 10 presidential debate against former President Donald Trump. The William Penn was locked down for sure, and very few people knew that’s where Harris would be going or staying after she arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport earlier in the day.
Harris more than likely won’t leave Pennsylvania before the debate, which will be held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. With the debate scheduled for 9 p.m. ET, the debate’s moderators are ABC News’ David Muir and Linsey Davis.
Throughout Thursday, Sept. 5, as word began to spread that Harris was Downtown, her supporters would cheer her name as they walked along the sidewalk across from the hotel. But there were also flags flying from Trump supporters, too. Oftentimes, the Trump supporters outnumbered the Harris supporters outside the hotel.
Come Election Night, however, there’s no doubt that Pittsburgh will go for Harris. Pittsburgh is a Democratic stronghold, and so is Allegheny County. While Trump is likely to get votes in the Pittsburgh suburbs and rural areas of the county, Harris is hoping to rack up the support in votes from the Pittsburgh proper population. In the 2020 Presidential Election, Joe Biden won Allegheny County by 20.5 percentage points, or 147,846 votes. Harris wants to win the county by even more.
For presidents to turn Pennsylvania blue, one must take care of business in Allegheny County, the Erie, Pa. area, and Philadelphia and a few of its Democratic-leaning suburban counties. The middle of the state is a Republican stronghold.
Biden won Pennsylvania by 1.2 percentage points, or roughly 81,000 votes. It will probably be another fight to the finish again for Pennsylvania come Election Day.
Pittsburgh resident Ginger Underwood, who is a Black woman, knows who she’s voting for. Standing outside the William Penn on Sept. 5, she told the Courier that Black women have “carried the Democratic Party for a long time, and to see a woman of color at the top of the ticket is exciting, and we’re gonna do everything we can to make sure she crosses the finish line.”
